Developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians, hula is a visual dance that tells a story. Sacred hula, celebrating Hawaiian gods, were also danced. American Protestant missionaries denounced the hula as a heathen dance after arriving in 1820, forcing the dance underground for many years.
