The Kukaniloko Birthstones were most powerful birth site for the Hawaiian island’s high chiefs. According to Hawaiian tradition, the stones relieved the pains of labor and eased the birthing process. Many are indented with bowl-like shapes and inscribed with hieroglyphics. Arranged in two rows of eighteen lava rocks facing north, a central birthing stone resides in the center.
The arrangement of the stones is believed to have been a map of the islands of Polynesia. The stones are astronomically aligned. Stars were tracked though their shape, with groves and concentric circles creating a sundial.
