Large flattened limestone slabs form the river rapids in The Great Lakes Region. The rocks date back 350 million years and contain sea fossils. There are cycles of flooding and seasonally low water. Plants and animals live with thin or no soil and sparse vegetation. The biological environment is called an alvar, and is only found in the Great Lakes Region and a few places in Europe.
