A mule rests on the 588 step winding path from port to village, 220 meters above sea level, on Santorini. The island is believed to be the lost city of Atlantis, as told by Ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Santorini was formed from an enormous volcanic explosion in the Aegean Sea 3,600 years ago. Possibly the largest volcanic explosion in recorded history, the sun darkened for several years and volcanic ash deposited around the world.
